Climate Change Awareness Week - w.c. 18th September 2006

  • Main Assemblies in the Hall were led by the Y.A.C.C. group, students were given the opportunity to learn about climate change in tutorials and to attend the Rock Concert Against Climate Change on Wednesday - see Nylon Sky, Four Days More and Twenty One Days. Watch a video clip from the concert: Real Player or Windows Media Player
  • The week ended with, 'Carbon Neutral Friday ' - where staff and students were encouraged to walk, cycle or share a lift to school. How did you travel? We will be asking each tutor group to calculate their carbon emissions for that day.

  • Competitions

  • Design a Flash Intro for this website: We would like to update this website with a professional and eye-catching flash intro that captures the key messages we are trying to present about the dangers of climate change and what we as individuals can do about it. The winning entry will become a part of this national website. Entries should be given to Ms Percy or emailed to us by Friday 29th September 2006. Remember to include your name and tutor group.

School Comms: There will be a prize for the Tutor Group that has the highest take up rate for School Comms. This is a new system where parents can receive letters from school by email rather than on paper. This is a major part of our strategy to reduce our colossal paper usage and it depends on parents signing up. For more information ask your form tutor. Parents can register by emailing Mrs Manhire in the school office.
  • Carbon Neutral Tutor Group: There will be a prize for the Tutor Group in each year that manages to make the greatest reduction in carbon emissions in their journey to and from school. Each tutor group will be asked to record how far from school each student lives, the way in which they usually travel to school and how they did so on 'Carbon Neutral Friday'. From this information you will be able to calculate how much carbon dioxide your tutor group would save over a full year if you always travelled like this.
  • Best Waste or Recycling Idea : There will be individual prizes for the best ideas about how we can reduce the waste we produce at school or increase the amount that we recycle. Please email entries, stating your name and tutor group.
  • Best Energy Saving Idea: There will be individual prizes for the best ideas about how we can reduce the energy we use at school. Please email entries, stating your name and tutor group.

Recycling Scheme set to begin

  • The council have agreed to collect waste for recycling from us. We are just waiting for them to resolve techinical problems with their 'Blue Igloo' recycling bins. We hope to have something up and running after half-term.

Crusade against Photocopying

  • Scandal at The Howard: The school uses about 2 million sheets of A4 plain white paper each year. That is in addition to all the lined paper and exercise books we fill up. We have set a target of reducing this by 25% during the school year 2006-07 and by 50% by 2007-08. If you have ideas about how to do this, please enter our Waste and Recycling competition above.
  • We are also trying to persuade the school to switch to using recycled paper in the first place. More soon...

Energy Watch!

  • How many tonnes of CO2 does the school produce each year? We aim to keep our very own Ship's Log of our gas and electricity consumption so that we can measure the success of our actions. Target: to reduce the school's electricity usage by 10% in 2006-07 versus last year.
